I wanted to share a really creative and inspiring music video with you all, it’s by Coldplay and it’s called “Strawberry Swing”. You can see it here!
It’s mind-numbing to think about how much work went into this music video, I really enjoy watching it.
Composition 2
I know it was asked in class, but who will be in the Composition 2 class next semester?
“Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more...
Gah
I realize that to produce music it is extremely useful to use the notation software, however, I really miss the old fashioned hand written way. (Perhaps this could be due to my lack of technical know how.)
SO
I am getting really excited about Tuesday. I don’t know about you guys, but I am soooooo ready to get these performances done.

In a search for some good A Cappella music to perform with my ensemble (Gemini Blvd.), I was shown this by a friend. Note, however, that it isn’t actually Rockapella, despite what the link says.

Concerning the Midterm Project
hey, Kay and Rub could i have your emails so i can send you what i have so far and you can tell me if you can play everything on it or if i have to change something
thank you,
Edward Romero
Well, the more I try to get what I already started on my project finished the more I come up with new ideas. I seem to be going back to the same points and playing with the melodies when I discover something that may sound better there. I feel like I am going in a circle at the moment.

Book Assignment
I decided to read about James Newton Howard, you might remember him from the presentation of a piece that we had a couple of weeks back, he’s written many movie scores and is highly known for them.

By the way!
The Christmas Medley post was by Stephen! Sorry for forgetting to sign it (again).
Christmas Medley! →
Just some more progress on my Christmas Medley! I’ve basically finished up with You’re a Mean One, Mister Grinch, as the song is just the same A section repeated. It’s kind of weird arranging a song without a B section, but it certainly makes life much easier for me!
Coming up next in the medley is Christmas Time is Here.

I have chosen...
Alan Silvestri. If you don’t know the name, maybe you’ll recognize the movies he’s worked on - Back To The Future, Forrest Gump, Castaway, The Mummy Returns, Night At The Museum, and many more. His most recent work is G.I. Joe - The Rise of Cobra.
I’ve found a large number of interviews that he has done on his website, as well as others on the web.
I should sign my posts as well...
I found a collection of interviews on Alan Silvestri that seems pretty interesting to me. He is the composer for many works in movies such as Back To The Future, Forrest Gump, Castaway, The Mummy Returns, The Polar Express, and many more.

Book Choice
I have decided to pick up the book “Sondheim on Music” for my reading material this semester. I’m going to check out one more library and if they don’t have it, looks like I’m gonna order it online. I can’t wait!

Composer's Book
I decided to read into Igor Stravinsky’s “Poetics of Music: In the form of Six Lessons”. From a little background research, he seems fairly interesting. ^^

A Year from Monday
I’ve decided to read A Year from Monday by John Cage. It seems like a highly interesting book written by a highly eccentric man.

In response to the video...
Thanks for the video! I love the fact the he researches while composing his music and how this piece is written without many parameters, allowing 9 or 99 people perform the work.
Oh, and my composer book is John Luther Adam’s “The Place Where You Go To Listen.”

Modes
I am having some difficulty picking a third mode. Perhaps I am indecisive. What did you guys pick?
This one is for Marie…John Luther Adams’ new work for Percussion Ensemble titled INUKSUIT (premiered summer 2009). Very interesting documentary — please give it a watch!

"Hallelujah Junction"
I am in quite the agreement with Adams about the new “open-minded” thought processes of this generation. Just looking at how Jazz has evolved recently(in the past twenty years) and its adventure into the field of Avant Garde we can being to see the “new wave” ideas of current musical ideas. Just think what would happen if Classical Musicians could “make music for music’s sake” instead of what the...
Response to "Hallelujah Junction"
John Adams’s work in this excerpt really highlighted some insightful and colorful comparisons on the difficulties and challenges of composing works in the present day. I found his comparison to gold panners particularly interesting; it is true that often times works are always compared to those of masters in years past, making it subsequently harder for those that follow to make a similar...
"Hallelujah Junction" reaction
Personally I found the allusions to Darwinism interesting in the idea of trying to strive for variation as a composer rather than progress. Maybe it’s just personal taste but I have always felt that some composers approach their compositions from too scholarly point of view and leave aesthetic value completely out of the equation. Music is an adaptive art form and should be treated as such;...
Reaction (reposted from home blog)
Sibelius Seventh Symphony is Fantastic.
I do find it strangely interesting how introspectively he thinks about composers in this generation. When he says he feels he has mastered very little on a dark day, I begin to become aware that there is more to master than can ever be Mastered.
I can also understand when he means to say that the age of the internet has clouded many minds from pure...

Reaction to Hallelujah Junction...
John Adams seems to be concerned with the static standards of many music critics today. Adams dismisses the idea that perfection within a classical musical model should be the aim of composers/musicians today. In stead, he suggests that if there were a standard, “variance” should be its name.
I really enjoyed this excerpt, not only for Adams’ clarity, but also because it...
